Hi, neighbor! As an Oakdale mom, I’ve learned that the best days aren't the ones that are the most complicated. They’re the simple ones: a sunny afternoon at the park, a sticky-fingered ice cream cone, or finding a new storybook to read before bed.
There’s a reason we call this place the “Cowboy Capital of the World,” and it’s not just about the rodeo. It’s about a warm, welcoming spirit that’s perfect for families. If you’re looking for ways to connect and make those simple, core memories with your kids, you’ve come to the right place.
Here are some of our family's all-time favorite spots, straight from my own "to-do list."
The Classic Park & Pool Day
When my kids have energy to burn, our first stop is almost always Dorada Park. It’s a true local favorite. We’ve spent countless hours on that wonderful wooden playground, and it’s the perfect spot for a picnic. On those hot Central Valley days, it’s right next to the Royse Memorial Plunge, our fantastic public pool, making it the perfect summer combo.
And a pro-tip for families with a mix of ages: if you have older kids who are "too cool" for the playground, the amazing Turnage Skatepark (the one you’ve probably seen with all the kids!) is just a few blocks away.
The All-Important Treat Stop
You can't have a park day without a treat, right? That’s just a parenting rule. Our two non-negotiable stops are:
Roberts Ferry Gourmet: This is an Oakdale institution. Come for the gifts and snacks, but stay for the famous milkshakes. My kids will do just about any chore if a Roberts Ferry shake is the reward.
The Inside Scoop: Just like the name says, this is where you go to find a flavor for absolutely everyone in the family. It’s the classic, happy ice cream parlor that every childhood memory needs.
A Taste of the Country
We’re so lucky to be surrounded by so much agriculture, and some of our best days are spent enjoying it.
SONS Farm Fresh: From March through October, this is our go-to for fresh-from-the-field goodies. There’s nothing better than grabbing a basket of sweet cherries or peaches and showing the kids exactly where their food comes from.
Bloomingcamp Ranch: This place is an absolute gem. It’s a bakery and a picnic destination all in one. We love to grab their incredible pastries (seriously, so good) and just enjoy the rustic, wide-open space.
Oakdale Cheese & Specialties: This is a true hidden treasure for families. My kids just call it "the goat place." Why? Because after you sample some of the most delicious locally-made cheese, you can take the kids out to the petting zoo to visit the friendly goats. It’s a win-win!
Indoor Adventures (for Hot Days & Quiet Afternoons)
When it’s 100 degrees out, or we just need a quiet afternoon, we head indoors.
Oakdale Cowboy Museum: Don’t let the word "museum" fool you—this place is fantastic for kids. It’s in the town's historic train depot and is truly hands-on. My kids love that they can actually touch the saddles, see the branding irons, and even try on some cowboy dress-up clothes. It really brings our "Cowboy Capital" history to life.
Oakdale Museum & History Center: Another great spot for a quick, cool-down activity. The kids get a kick out of the replica "General Store" exhibit, and it’s a sweet, simple way to show them what Oakdale used to be like.
Story Books & Toys: This is my secret weapon. It’s the most charming, locally owned shop, and it’s my favorite place to duck into for a new puzzle, a unique gift, or just the perfect bedtime story.
When You Want to Make a Day of It
If you have a full day and are feeling a little more adventurous, we love heading just a few minutes out of town to Knights Ferry. You can walk across the incredible historic covered bridge (the longest one west of the Mississippi!), explore the trails, and in the summer, you can even take a super-mellow, family-friendly raft trip down the Stanislaus River.
Honestly, the list could go on. We’ll grab a family-style pasta dinner at Firenze Ristorante, pick up a pizza from Gold Dust, have an afternoon tea at Tea at 202, or treat ourselves to a special family night out at Bistro 120.
In Oakdale, you’ll find that "family fun" isn't about one giant, flashy attraction. It’s about all these wonderful little moments, shared adventures, and the sweet, simple joys that end up meaning the most.
Hope to see your family around town!
